Message from Reverend Elizabeth

season of creation

Dear Friends

After such a lovely summer, it is hard to accept the shorter days and colder temperatures. Autumn has a bonus, though and we are usually blessed with lovely golden colours, as the leaves turn delicate shades of brown, rust, red and gold. It is harvest time and we celebrate in the ‘Season of Creation’ all that is dedicated to God as Creator and Sustainer of all life.

Creationtide is originally an Eastern Orthodox initiative, but has now spread widely among Anglican, Roman Catholic and Protestant congregations, bringing people together to pray and work for the protection of the environment that sustains everyone.

Last year, on a different ‘harvest’ note, one of the churches in our Benefice held an  ‘Auction of Talents’ – harvesting the gifts and talents that each and every one of us has. Talents were shared and offered and it was amazing just how many hidden gifts people had!  Some had certainly been hiding their light under a bushel!

Harvest time sees the ordination of priests (as well as at the traditional Petertide at the end of June) - those whose vocation is to serve in ordained ministry. They offer their gifts and talents to serve in a specific way.

More and more people choose not to get ordained but put themselves through formal training to allow them to use their gifts as ministers in a different way. These are people who may follow a local ministry track, such as Pastoral Care Minister or Reader. The Diocese of Lichfield authorizes a range of lay ministries. Many people are involved in ministry in their own parish, workplace or community and do not need to be authorized to do this. However, there are certain roles in the church and the community that benefit from both training and authorization.

All Saints Church has had a Reader licensed for some time, and we congratulate Carole Ellis on 25 years of service in this role. Bishop Michael formally congratulated Carole on this commitment in Lichfield Cathedral at a special Eucharist in September.

Another vocation is to be formally authorized for St. Stephen’s Church. Dorothy Giles, who had been a Reader over 25 years ago, is to renew her License specifically to serve in this place. Congratulations to them both!

Harvesting of gifts and talents is what we are all about. Are you hiding your gifts and talents? It is harvest time and there is something truly special about sharing your gifts with others in the service of God.

All best wishes Elizabeth
