From the Curate - June 2019

Time to say goodbye…

Dear Friends,

Time passes so quickly.  In the time it takes you to read this post 3 babies will have been born, and 2 people will have passed away.  The world we live in is obsessed with time.  We are always complaining of not having enough time, of having too much to do; we apologise because we don’t achieve thirty hours work in every twenty-four.  Sleep is seen as wasteful- I’ll sleep when I’m dead.. and surviving on minimal sleep carries a badge of honour.

God teaches us to see time differently.  Jesus takes time to be with people, to listen with compassion and truly see them.  He spent time with his disciples but he also spent time in prayer; not alone but in conversation with his Father, in conversation with the one who, because of Jesus, we can now call our Father.  Jesus was not afraid to move on when he knew God wanted him to, knowing that what he had begun would continue through his disciples and the Holy Spirit at work in the world.

Three years has passed in the blink of an eye, and yet during that time God has blessed us all with wonderful moments and lasting memories.  Curacy was always going to be a transitional ministry, as I completed training and looked to my first post of responsibility.  As that moment now approaches rapidly, I want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers, support, guidance and criticism which have fuelled my growth into the servant of God I now am.  A special thank you must of course be extended to Revd John and Revd Elizabeth, Carole and Dot, who by their examples of very different ministry, have shown me how to live out my own calling.  John of course bore the lion’s share of the load tolerating me as a curate for three years- I hope I haven’t put him off being a Training Incumbent!!!  There are far too many people to thank everyone individually here: to those who have coached and mentored me during my time in Alrewas- you know who you are- my grateful and enduring thanks.

I welcome seeing as many of you as possible on the 16th June for my final service in the benefice, a united 10am service at All Saints, and at my collation in Kinnerley on the 8th July at 8pm.  Revd John is organising transport for those able to join us. (Thank you John!)    I close with the heart-warming knowledge that God continues to bless the villages of Alrewas, Fradley and Wychnor, and I assure you of my continuing prayers in the months and years ahead.

With love and best wishes

Revd Chris
