‘From Now On’ – An Exciting Opportunity this Lent

In case you’ve not yet checked your diary, the 40-day observance of the season of Lent begins in February on Wednesday the 26th , which is historically known as Ash Wednesday  –  a special Holy Communion including the Imposition of Ashes will be held at 7:30 pm in Alrewas Church,  for all interested persons from the communities of Alrewas, Fradley and Wychnor, and we do hope you will make time to participate!

During the Lenten season, many people choose to ‘give up’ something they enjoy, as a means of appreciating the suffering and sacrifice Jesus made for us as he gave his life on the cross. Of course, that can be a very meaningful personal practice…..but, as Jesus also challenged us to ‘take up your cross and follow me’, another perfectly valid way of observing a Holy Lent is to ‘take up’ something that you might not normally do, as a way of entering more deeply into the joys and challenges of a Christian life-journey.

from now on

For all who are willing to do so, I warmly  invite you this Lent to ‘take up’ our mid-week Lent Discussion Group, offered jointly by All Saints Church and Alrewas Methodist Church. Together we will be exploring an internationally acclaimed film which has rapidly become a modern classic – The Greatest Showman – which, through an engaging storyline and truly inspirational songs, depicts the story of P.T.Barnum as he follows his dream to become a ‘success’ and create a truly novel form of entertainment which is now commonly known as ‘the Big Top’,  referring to ‘the Circus’.

To help us with our discussions, we will be using the short course from Rachel Mann entitled From Now On: A Lent Course on Hope and Redemption in ‘The Greatest Showman’.

In addition to showing the film prior to our first discussion session (in case you’ve never had the chance to see it, or you’d really like to see it again!), over five weekly evenings we’ll be exploring how faith, hope and redemption runs through each of our own lives as well, and how – like P.T. Barnum and members of his Circus – we too can face and overcome doubt, temptation and prejudice, and begin to live truly authentic lives.

If you wish to join us for this unique adventure, we will be meeting at Alrewas Methodist Church on the Wednesday nights of March 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th as well as 1st April (no fooling!),   7:30 to 9:00 pm. There is no fee to join in….free refreshments will be available…..and you will be warmly welcome to join in as many of the sessions as you can!

With every blessing for an inspiring Lenten journey,

                                        your Vicar and friend,    John
